# Airport Airside Drainage & Ducting

Runway sub-surface drainage and AGL cable ducts under one specification.

## Overview
Airside drainage and cable containment for runways, taxiways and aprons: perforated sub-surface collectors under the pavement, piped surface drainage across the movement area, and duct banks carrying airfield ground lighting and navigation aid cable.

## Specification
- **Product range:** Alcorr DWC + Telecorr DWC HDPE
- **Standard:** IS 16098 / IS 16205
- **Drainage Sizes:** ID 100 mm to ID 1000 mm
- **Duct Sizes:** ID 50 mm to ID 200 mm
- **Compliance Codes:** IS 16098 & IS 16205

## Why HDPE here
- One supplier across the drainage and the airfield lighting duct scope
- Flexible profile tolerates the settlement of deep new pavement fill
- Fast enough to lay inside a night-possession window between operations

## Typical deployments
- Runway sub-surface drainage
- Taxiway and apron surface drainage
- Airfield ground lighting duct banks
- Navaid and perimeter sensor cable ducts

## Specification and site notes

### The night window governs everything
Airside work happens between the last movement and the first, and the pavement has to be trafficable again by morning. Pipe that a crew places by hand, joints without cure time and backfills the same shift is what makes that programme feasible.

### Foreign object debris discipline
Every offcut, cap and lubricant tin is a FOD hazard on a live movement area. Cut off-pavement where possible, cap open ends immediately, and count materials in and out of the works area at each shift change.

### Separate the drainage and lighting scopes underground
Drainage collectors and AGL duct banks share the same shallow zone under the shoulder and cross each other constantly. Fix the levels for both at design stage; discovering the clash at 2am in a possession is how a window gets lost.

### Settlement under new pavement fill
Deep new fill under an extended runway or a greenfield apron settles for years. A flexible pipe deflects with it and holds its joint seal, where a rigid line cracks and then has to be excavated through finished pavement.

## FAQ

### What pipe is used for runway sub-surface drainage?
Perforated Alcorr DWC HDPE to IS 16098 (Part 2), laid in a granular surround with a geotextile envelope, collecting into solid-wall carriers. The perforated collector intercepts water in the sub-base; the carrier takes it clear of the pavement.

### Can the same supplier cover airfield lighting ducts?
Yes. AGL and navaid cable runs use Telecorr DWC HDPE conduit to IS 16205 (Part 24). Taking both scopes from one supplier means one set of socket dimensions and one set of test certificates across the airside package.

### Why does pipe weight matter on an airside package?
Because the work happens in a night possession and the pavement has to be trafficable by morning. Pipe that a crew places by hand, joints with no cure time and backfills in the same shift is what fits inside that window.

### How is FOD risk managed during pipe laying?
Cut off-pavement wherever possible, cap every open end as soon as it is made, and count materials in and out at each shift change. Offcuts, end caps and lubricant tins are all foreign object debris on a live movement area.
