Specification and site notes
Allow for temperature
PN ratings are quoted at 20 °C. A process line running warm safely carries less pressure than its printed class. Apply the reduction factor for the actual running temperature before selecting SDR, or the line is over-rated in service without anyone noticing.
Fused joints, no gaskets
Butt fusion and electrofusion give one continuous welded line with no gasket to age, relax or be attacked by the fluid. On a chemical duty that removes the component that normally fails first.
Send the fluid analysis
Chemical resistance depends on the specific fluid, its concentration and its temperature together, not on pH alone. An analysis with the enquiry gets a specification against your actual duty rather than a generic compatibility table.
Thermal movement
HDPE expands and contracts appreciably with temperature. Above ground, allow for movement with proper anchoring and offsets; buried and restrained, the soil takes the strain and no allowance is needed.
FAQ
Can HDPE pipe carry chemical process fluids?
For a wide range of acids, alkalis and salts, yes. They do not attack HDPE, and fully welded joints leave no gasket for the fluid to attack. Compatibility depends on the specific fluid, concentration and temperature together, so send the analysis with the enquiry.
Does the pressure rating change with temperature?
Yes. PN classes are quoted at 20 °C and must be reduced for warmer service. Apply the reduction factor for the actual running temperature before selecting SDR, or the line is quietly over-rated in service.
Why are fused joints preferred on process lines?
Butt fusion and electrofusion produce one continuous line as strong as the pipe itself. There is no gasket to age, relax or be chemically attacked, which removes the component that usually fails first on a chemical duty.
