Pressure class comes from head plus surge
The rising main sees static head to the delivery point plus the surge when the pump cuts in or out. PN 10 suits shallow lifts; deep borewells and high-head duties need PN 16 or PN 20 (SDR 9). Under-specifying here shows up as a burst at the surge, not at steady state.
Suspended load
The column carries the pump, the water in it and the cable. Confirm the total suspended weight against the pipe's tensile capacity at the setting depth, and support the head with a proper clamp, never on the fitting alone.
Why the energy bill falls
A scale-free bore holds its friction loss for the life of the main, where a galvanised iron column rusts up inside and the head loss climbs year after year. The pump then has to work harder for the same output. HDPE does not do this.
Surge and cycling
The pipe's elasticity absorbs water hammer when the pump cycles, which protects the joints and the non-return valve. A rigid column transmits that shock straight into the fittings.
