Specification and site notes
Acidic mine water
Runoff turns acidic as sulphide minerals in the rock oxidise, and that acid destroys concrete and unprotected steel. HDPE is unaffected by it and has no steel reinforcement to attack, which is why a plastic line survives water that finishes off the alternatives within a few seasons.
Easy to move as the pit advances
The working benches move, and the drainage layout has to move with them. Push-fit socket joints come apart and go back together, and the pipe is light enough to lift and re-lay with the machinery already on site. A line you can recover is worth more than one you have to abandon.
Abrasion and gradient
The smooth bore stands up to gritty flow far better than a rough surface, but the faster the flow, the faster it wears. Where slurry loading is heavy, control the gradient rather than reaching for a thicker wall.
Deep cover under haul roads
Specify SN 16 under haul roads and overburden dumps. Loading here is well outside highway Class A, and the design cover is often several times a normal municipal burial.
FAQ
Does HDPE pipe resist acid mine drainage?
Yes. HDPE is unaffected by the acidic sulphide runoff that attacks concrete and unprotected steel, and it has no reinforcement to corrode. That is the main reason a plastic drain survives this water where the alternatives fail within a few seasons.
Can a mine drainage line be relocated as benches advance?
Yes. Push-fit socket joints can be pulled apart and re-made, and the pipe is light enough to lift and re-lay with plant already on site. A recoverable line is a large part of the economic case in an active pit.
What ring stiffness is used in mining?
SN 8 for general site drainage, SN 16 under haul roads and overburden dumps where the loading is well beyond highway Class A and cover depth is much greater than a municipal burial.
How does DWC pipe handle abrasive slurry?
The smooth inner wall erodes far more slowly than a rough surface under gritty flow. Abrasion still scales with velocity, so on heavy slurry duty the control is gradient and velocity, not a thicker wall.
Commonly specified sizes
At ID 1000 mm a DWC length weighs about an eighth of the same size in RCC and goes in without a crane, so the biggest sizes are where it beats concrete by the widest margin.
